Boners. Who knew they’d become a focal point of my life? I launched Girl Boner® on my blog five years ago this week and thought I’d celebrate with some fun boner facts, because why not?

Most everyone who gets sexually aroused experiences them.

“Do girls get boners?” I hear this question a lot. The answer is yes! During female sexual arousal — or arousal in a person with a vulva — blood flows to the genitals, causing the clitoris and surrounding area to fill with blood. That engorged clit? It’s also known as a clitoral erection or, my favorite term in the universe, a Girl Boner.

Ours may be less obvious from the outside, but they're no less fabulous.

People with penises can get Girl Boners, too.

If you’re a trans woman with a penis, your erections are Girl Boners, too, by my broader definition. A woman turned on has a Girl Boner, hands down. Whatever genitalia you have or wish to change to is rockstar and embraceable—no matter what you prefer to call your boners.

The average boner length is around 5 to 6.5 inches.

Again, I’m talking Girl Boners, too. The clitoris and penis start from the same tissue back in Womb-ville. The clitoris, most of which is internal, swells up to about the same size as the typical erect penis during sexual arousal. (Not that there’s anything “typical” about your penis, if you have one! Every clitoris and penis is unique and extraordinary. *insert pretty music*)

Pleasure comes in all sized packages.

The largest Guy Boner on record to date is 13.5 inches.

This boner belonged to Jonah Falcon, who’s appeared on TV to display his erection and posed for a German magazine wearing bike shorts. (I hope to chat with him on Girl Boner Radio soon, so stay tuned!) We don’t know the largest Girl Boner size, given all sorts of factors, from limited research to the fact that they aren’t as easily measurable. No matter what the size, though, all boners can bring and experience pleasure.

Nocturnal boners and sleep-gasms are very real and common.

If you’ve ever woken up after a spicy dream with a bit of wetness in your PJs, you may have experienced a sleep-gasm or wet dream. Again, it doesn’t matter where you fall on the gender spectrum. Sleep-gasms don’t discriminate! I’m glad they don’t, because an orgasm in your sleep can be fun, especially if you wake up meanwhile or recall the dream.
